Opening a local bank account

All international students would be able to benefit from opening a local bank account because there are perks available for students and you can also avoid paying for a withdrawal fee from local ATMs.

The two big Swiss banks are UBS Group AG and Credit Suisse Group AG. The previous links would lead you directly to open an account as a student in Switzerland. There is a list of Cantonal Banks to choose from too.

  • According to Studying in Switzerland website, it is challenging to set up your account before you arrive in Swiss. You will have to contact the Swiss bank and request for the application package.
  • The non-residents need to be at least 18 years old to open a bank account

MABECS Global education advisors would recommend students to find out which bank’s ATM is the nearest to your accommodation or campus – and then consider applying an account with this bank for your convenience and to avoid extra withdrawal charges. You can also find out more on average fees and cost of living in Switzerland by reading this article.
